Devotions… Where to start?
Many people who have come to Christ can at times be overwhelmed with where to start. They get asked “are you doing devotions”? Where do you start? What are devotions? Here is a simple answer for those seeking to start daily devotions but are wanting a simple place.
Devotions are the reading of scriptures daily for the purpose of knowledge. This differs from daily bible study in that is fixates on a chapter, verse or section of the bible for meditating throughout the day on, instead of just on the purpose of deepening knowledge of the bible in general.
If your looking for a place to start, consider Proverbs, and here is why. Proverbs contains wisdom based scripture, and has 31 chapters. This allows for reaching a chapter each day of the month, allowing it to be a perfect start for those seeking to begin devotions. How this works is simple.
On the first of the month, read chapter one, and on the second read chapter two, and so forth. On months with less than 31 days, just combine the few extra chapter with the last day of the months reading (for example, February with 28 days would include chapters 28, 29, 30, and 31).
As you read, consider a verse or idea within the chapter that just stands out. Meditate on that thought through out the day on what it means, or how it applies to your life. This is a great way to apply devotions to your life, especially if your just starting.
